The "BUCK" System

"THE BUCK SYSTEM"

Parents: Part of me and Mr. Kasch's discipline plan involves "bucks" Ten paper dollars are given to the students every Monday. Throughout the week students may have to spend them on a variety of things.

If their agendas aren't signed- $1
An extra trip to the restroom after we've gone as a class- $1
A pencil if you came to class unprepared- $2
An extra copy of a homework page-$2

You get the idea...If students aren't doing the things that are expected of them. It will cost them.

Another way to lose bucks is for behavior. If a student is yelling things out in class, arguing with a classmate, disrespectful to a teacher; all of these examples will cost bucks. The amount of bucks will be determined by Mr. Kasch and myself based on the situation.

As long as by Friday the student...

-still has two bucks
-hasn't had to give two for behavior reasons

It means an extended lunch recess on Fridays! YAY!

Happy Friday!

We made it through our first full week! It sounds like for the most part things ran smoothly with the sub yesterday. Thanks for doing your job as students and doing what was expected of you.

Today you had your first taste of an extra Friday recess reward. If you earned it, nice job!
If you didn't have enough bucks or you lost two due to behavior problems, next week is a new week! Everyone gets a fresh start and will have new opportunities to earn the extra Friday recess.

No homework this weekend! Enjoy!

Thursday 8/25/11

Hello students and families!
Unfortunately I am ill today and not able to be in school.

5th grade germs: 1 pt
Miss Baker's immune system: 0 pts

There will however, still be some homework assigned for tonight. I'm not sure what Mr. Kasch is assigning, but for me you will need to have a summary of what you read today in Language Arts from your independent reading book. I will be checking your Language Arts journals for this on Monday.

The work you did in Social Studies will not be homework to take home, but I will be checking your Social Studies journals on Monday to see how far you got in class with the sub.

Hope to see you all tomorrow, but if I'm still under the weather, I'll see you Monday!
Behave yourselves, now!

Miss Baker
*The sub may have modified my plans, but the above is true if he/she stuck to the plan.

Need for New Pencil Sharpener

Hello families!
Something I've realized a little late this year is that our class needs a new electric pencil sharpener.  Comment below if you're interested in donating one!

Thanks!

Monday 8/22/11 Homework

Language Arts: Dictionary skills review worksheet. Most of this can be done without a dictionary. Only the last section with the syllabication requires the use of a dictionary. We'll talk about this portion in class.

Weekend Reminders

Hey class!
Thanks for making this first week great. It's been wonderful building a little community over the past day and a half and I'm thrilled to watch it grow.

Some things to remember for Monday:

  • Bring back that important paperwork if you haven't yet already or if you've only returned some of it.
  • In that paperwork don't overlook the technology user agreement--you will need to have that signed (both student and parent) in order to use the computers in the lab this coming Wednesday.
  • Remember to bring a water bottle to school. (You can leave it at school and bring it home to wash it on the weekends or bring one everyday.)
  •  Please bring the supplies listed on the letter we sent home as you will need them Monday.
  • Be ready for a full schedule next week complete with homework. :)
Until then, enjoy your weekend!

First Day! Plus Info for Tomorrow

Hi all! So lovely to meet you today!
I know switching classes is hard at first, but once we're through the first couple of weeks, you'll all be old pros! Tomorrow being Friday, you will be sticking with your homeroom classmates the whole day.
However, you won't be in our classroom for much of it as we will have specials on Fridays.

So tonight you can look forward to PE, ART, and MUSIC.

You may bring your supplies tomorrow if you'd like but they are not needed until Monday.

Families: Please go through the blue folder that was sent home with your students. There are important papers that will need to come back to school at your earliest convenience.

Also...The district is still working out some issues with my FUSD email and I am not able to access  any emails at this time through this account.

So...in the meantime please email me at my personal email account with any questions, concerns, or info you'd like to send my way!

Looking forward to a year full of growth!

Welcome!

Hello Students and Families!
Welcome to the 5th grade! I'm so very excited to meet each and every one of you in person on Thursday. If you're thinking I look familiar it's probably because in the Spring, I student taught right across the hall in Ballard/Novak's 4th/5th multiage classroom. I'm a recent graduate of NAU's College of Education and am eager to put into practice all that I've learned. I'm confident that we'll make incredible growth this year as a learning community. Get ready to work hard, and learn skills that will prepare you for sixth grade (and life!)

In the meantime, soak up your last two days of summer and go ahead and pick up the supplies you'll be needing for the year. (Mr. Kasch and I have put together a list that can be found here.)
